There are several moments at which you may wish to contact the coordinator:
When you have plans for an internship, and you have obtained permission from the director to perform an internship you should contact the coordinator to discuss a project topic and a mentor. The coordinator will try to find a match between your interests, the courses you completed, and the available projects and mentors. He will also arrange the first contact between the mentor and yourself, and after that he is out of the loop (and your contacts continue with the mentor).
When you have plans for doing a master thesis project in the IS group, and you satisfy the requirements for acceptance in the IS group, you should make a first appointment with the coordinator long enough in advance to discuss the courses you are still going to take. When you decide to choose your set of elective courses without consulting the coordinator you should not be surprised if a number of your choices are deemed unacceptable for doing a thesis project in the IS group. The coordinator can match your interests with the available courses and help you decide on an appropriate course program. The first contact with the coordinator should take place before the start of the first elective course.
When the starting date for your master thesis project approaches, say around 3 months (or more) before that date, you should contact the coordinator to discuss concrete topics and mentors for the project. The coordinator will again try to find a match between your interests, the courses in your program, and the available projects and mentors. Because the coordinator has to manage a large number of students, projects and mentors, he will find the best possible match, considering the global planning. This may imply that you do not get the first topic or mentor on your wishlist. The coordinator will arrange the first contact between the mentor and yourself, and after that he is out of the loop (and your contacts continue with the mentor).
Important note: When your contact with the coordinator is over (and you have a project and mentor) you still need to obtain permission to actually start the project. The rules and regulations (for BIS and CSE) contain the exact requirements you must fulfill before being allowed to start a master thesis project.
