prof.dr.ir. G.J. Houben

Geert-Jan Houben is full professor in Web information systems at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the department of Software Technology. He is part-time associated with the Computer Science department of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e). Geert-Jan leads in Delft and Eindhoven the Hera research program on Web Information Systems.

Previously, Geert-Jan studied computing science, got his Ph.D. with a thesis on complex objects databases, had several consultancy jobs with consultancy firms in the Netherlands (e.g. Bakkenist, BSO, Origin), held a position in the ADREM group in the Computer Science department of the University of Antwerp, was leading the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group in the Computer Science department of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, served between 2001 and 2004 as the chairman of the board of the Computer Science department in Eindhoven, was associated with the INS2 group at CWI in Amsterdam, was a guest-professor at the University of Antwerp, was the director of the Business Information Systems (BIS) master program in Eindhoven, was between 2005 and 2008 full professor of information systems at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and co-director of the WISE laboratory for Web & Information System Engineering, and was at VUB member of the board of the faculty of Sciences.

Currently, his main research area is Advanced technology for Web-based Information Systems (AWIS), with topics like Web and Semantic Web technology, semi-structured data, Web query and transformation languages, Web data integration and distribution, Web presentation generation, adaptation and personalization in Web applications, Web engineering, and Web information system architecture. Most of his research and his PhD-students are part of the Hera program. In it, the focus is on the application of Semantic Web and Web 2.0 technologies and concepts to provide innovative solutions for (personalized) access to large-scale networked information collections. These specific topics are embedded in the fundamental and applied research done by the entire research lab in the general area of information systems.

Geert-Jan is managing editor of JWE, the Journal of Web Engineering, and he is member of the Editorial Board of ACM TWEB, ACM Transactions on the Web.
