Prof. dr. P.M.E. De Bra

Paul De Bra was (full) Professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology and is now retired.

From 1977 to 1981 he studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Antwerp, where he graduated with "greatest distinction". He also obtained a teaching certificate that year.

From 1981 to 1988 he was a database researcher at the University of Antwerp. As such he obtained a doctorate in computer science in february 1987.

During 1988 and 1989 he did research on WYSIWYG interfaces and document processing at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey.

For a brief period (3 months) he worked as a software engineer at Agfa Gevaert, in Antwerp, Belgium.

In December 1989 he joined the Computer Science department of the Eindhoven University of Technology where he headed the Database and Hypermedia Research Group (later called Web Engineering).

Professor De Bra performed research on different aspects of hypermedia systems. Currently, he was most active in the area of adaptive hypermedia and adaptive Web-based systems, with applications in technology-enhanced learning, e-culture, and e-commerce.

From 1987 to 2007 Prof. De Bra was also a part-time professor at the University of Antwerp, in the Information Science and the Computer Science departments.

Prof. De Bra performed research on different aspects of hypermedia systems and object-oriented databases. For the last 20 years of his career he was most active in the area of adaptive hypermedia and adaptive Web-based systems.

In 1993 Prof. De Bra started an introductory course on hypermedia through Internet. This course was officially open for students from the universities of Antwerp, Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and the Open University, but could also be taken by students from other universities. As such it was a MOOC avant la lettre. (Prof. De Bra taught several other courses in the areas of databases, hypermedia and user-interfaces, but these were not available on-line for non-TU/e students.)
